"Making Every Effort for Sabo" as a successor to our founder's resolution |
The bronze statue of Dr. Masao Akagi, the founder of Japan Sabo Association
(JSA) who devoted his life to Sabo, stands by the dogwoods in front of
the Sabo House. At the foot of the statue, rocks sent from the site of
Sabo works in all parts of the country surround the statue of Dr. Akagi.
In accordance with his belief that "Sabo is important for flood control," Dr. Akagi repeatedly advocated the necessity of Sabo to conquer erosion and sediment disasters and keep our hometowns safe. He visited the sites of Sabo works in various parts of the country. Dr. Akagi usually dressed as shown in his bronze statue. Dr. Akagi established JSA in 1935 sympathy with regional residents who suffered from erosion and sediment disasters and eagerly talked about the promotion of Sabo. We have been making an effort to develop and promote Sabo projects as the voice of residents and local governments by uniting residents' assiduous efforts and enthusiasm. JSA became a corporate juridical person in 1940, and has been playing an important role in society for 60 years since then. With its headquarters for activities located in the Sabo Hall in Hirakawa-cho, Tokyo, the JSA has branches and associations in the prefectures that are engaged in their own activities, working in cooperation with the headquarters. At present, there are about 2,730 municipal members, which constitutes more than 80% of the municipalities nationwide, and they support our activities with great expectations for Sabo projects. In response to the diversifying and ever-changing society of 2000 that brings the expectation of new hope, with our predecessors' great achievements and wishes in mind, we need to fully recognize the role of Sabo for the preservation of the nation's lands, the prevention of disasters and the creation of a nation abundant with nature and to contribute greatly to the expansion and reinforcement of Sabo projects. |
